The Challenge
Africa faces an unprecedented environmental crisis while over 60% of its population—children and youth—lack adequate access to quality environmental education. This educational gap leaves a whole generation ill-prepared to address the environmental challenges threatening their communities and futures.
Many schools have limited or no environmental curricula, especially in rural and underserved areas, where access to trained educators and learning resources is scarce. Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage young learners or connect scientific concepts to their life experiences and local environments.
This problem is compounded by increasing pressure on Africa's ecosystems—shrinking water supplies, soil degradation, and loss of biodiversity—which directly affect food security, health, and economic development.
Without urgent action to close the educational divide, the continent risks perpetuating cycles of environmental degradation and poverty, while forfeiting the potential of its youth to become agents of positive change.
